  • Tour code-MTS02:GREAT WALL HIKING TOUR

The Great Wall of China, one of the world’s modern wonders, and one of the greatest technological achievements in all of mankind, has long held the imagination of writers, scientists, soldiers, and now of course, travelers and adventurers. Within its countless bricks and watchtowers lies the boundless spirit of Chinese civilization. When you walk on its sacred ground you will feel this spirit all around you. The fun and excitement you get from exploring this marvel will stay with you for the rest of your life. We believe that everyone should experience this feeling at least once in their lives.

As the most popular hiking trip of the Great Wall around Beijing, it will show you both Guibeikou and Jinshanling sections of the wall within 5 hours.

Gubeikou was a key strategic target in military campaigns since ancient times, and Jinshanling is the best preserved part of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty with many original features. Both Gubeikou and Jinshanling are the most photogenic sections of the Great Wall. The Wall snakes from west to east along the Yanshan Mountain range and disappears in far distance. There are many ups and downs, as well as some big and steep steps. You have to be prepared for this lifetime adventure!

In the morning, we will pick you up at your Beijing hotel at 7:30am and drive 2.5 hours to Gubeikou. After 2 hrs hiking on the wall of Gubeikou section, we have to get off the wall to avoid a military area nearby. Going through the path in the field for 1.5 hrs, and then we will come back to the wall again at the Jinshanling section for another 1.5hrs hiking. This section of the Wall is very popular among keen photographers for its intact watchtowers, beacon towers and other solid constructions. In late afternoon, we will drive 2.5 hours back to your hotel in Beijing.

Jiankou to Mutianyu offers a wonderfully satisfying experience of the Wall. The brickwork is elaborate, with crenellations on both sides and finely curved eaves on some watchtower roofs. There are decorative gables with animal statues, and tablets bearing calligraphy above some entrances. Hiking the whole route within 4hrs is like traveling through time from primitive to modern, presenting three phases of the Great Wall with striking contrast from wild, half-repaired to totally repair.

Challenge the most precipitous Jiankou section of the Great Wall, wild, weathered and primitive. Jiankou is translated as “Arrow Nock” in English, since the shape of the mountains where the wall was built is like an arrow with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock. Mutianyu section of the Great Wall boasts the most beautiful scenery of all the sections. It has superb scenery, dense vegetation and many fine watch-towers in an excellent restored section which is about six meters broad.

Pick you up at your hotel in Beijing at 7:30 am and drive to Jiankou (2.5 hrs). Jiankou is the steepest section of the wall around Beijing, the hiking will start from the unrestored section, which is going straight up and reaching the wall, and then hike unrestored towers. The wild wall to the west is the original Ming Dynasty with fine stonework, and there are almost no other people. You will be rewarded when you approach Zhenbeilou Tower, where you will have a breathtaking view of Jiankou section, and when you continue to the renovated wall eastward to complete the hiking and arrive at Mutianyu, there’s a sharp contrast between restored wall and original wall. After a late lunch, you will be driven 2.5 hours back to your hotel in Beijing.
